Which sleeping position is right for you?
Your sleeping position is definitely something you should pay attention to. As you may have already waked up with back pain, you probably wondered which sleeping position is the best for you. Sleeping on your side, on your back or on your stomach? Which one suits you best? Specialists from Harvard Medical School warn that sleeping on your stomach is tough on your spine, because the back is arched and your neck is turned to the side. Preferred sleeping positions are often set early in life and can be tough to change, not to mention that we don’t often wake up in the same position in which we fell asleep. Still, it’s worth trying to start the night sleeping on your back or side in a well-supported, healthy position. However, back sleeping is not indicated for everyone, such as snorers and those with sleep apnea. In this case, side sleeping is best because it helps keep your airways open. Research suggests sleeping on the left side can relieve heartburn symptoms, while right-side sleeping makes them worse. Sleeping on the left side is also recommended during pregnancy to improve circulation to the heart -- good for mom and baby. Sleeping on your stomach can be hard on your back. But some people cannot fall asleepany other way. In this case, the strain on the back can be reduced by placing a pillow under the pelvis and lower abdomen.
