How to keep good eye health?

Eye health is evolving constantly, this is why your eyes need attention just like any other part of your body. To protect your sight, you need to develop healthy habits that would help you prevent future eye conditions. Here are a few tips on how to keep your eyes healthy for longer: (1) Wearing sunglasses is mandatory: Sunglasses are not just a fashion accessory, they help protect the eyes form the UV rays and prevent you from developing macular degeneration and cataracts. Choosing the right sunglasses is not an easy job. Speak with your eye doctor about lenses that block almost totally the UVA and UVB sun rays. (2) Quit smoking: If you smoke, know that it is also very bad for your eyes, not only for your lungs, skin and other parts of your body. Smoking has been shown to be linked to increased risk of developing age-related macular degeneration, cataract, and optic nerve damage. (3) Don’t ignore your family’s eye health history: Some of the diseases or conditions are hereditary, therefore ask about any diseases that run in your family to determine if you are at higher risk for developing them. (4) Your eyes also need rest: When spending hours and hours in front of your computer or just focusing too much on a particular thing, you may forget to blink and your eyes can get really tired. Try the 20-20-20 rule: Every 20 minutes, look away about 20 meters in front of you, for about 20 seconds to reduce eyestrain. (5) Be more careful about your weight: When you are overweight or obese you basically increase your risk of developing diabetes and other systemic conditions, which can lead to vision loss. (6) Wear safety eyewear: Whether you play sports, do activities around the home or work with hazardous material, wear protective eyewear like safety glasses and goggles, safety shields, and eye guards to provide the protection for a certain activity. (7) Don’t forget about regular eye exams: Eye exams can also find some eye diseases that apparently have no symptoms. Discovering these problems very early can make the treatment more successful. ...
