7 Signs You’re Having a Migraine – Headache and Migraine Center – Everyday Health
Is it a bad headache or a migraine? The warning signs of a migraine may surprise you, according to a neurologist at Stanford University School of Medicine, Robert Cowan, MD. One clue that a migraine might be on the way is yawning. People start yawning more frequently a day or 2 before a migraine hits, and may also notice food cravings, fatigue, thirst and mental fog, says Dr. Cowan. Another better-known alert to watch for is vision changes called an aura, which can include blurry vision, seeing spots or stars, and tunnel vision. These “prodromes” typically strike 30 minutes before migraine pain. Women, in particular, should pay close attention to aura, since premenopausal women who have this migraine symptom are at increased risk for stroke. However, that risk can be reduced by not smoking and avoiding use of birth control pills, which could increase stroke risk, according to Cowan. Pins and needle sensations or tingling in the hands, feet, legs or face are also associated with migraines. If you have any of the key warning signs described in this article, discuss them with your doctor since getting the right diagnosis for your headaches is crucial so you get the best treatment to reduce or prevent migraines. ...
