How parents and children can avoid spreading conjunctivitis?
Conjunctivitis is redness and inflammation of the thin layer of tissue that covers the front of the eye (conjunctiva). It is very common and people often refer to conjunctivitis as pinkeye. Other symptoms of conjunctivitis include itchiness and watering of the eyes, and sometimes a sticky coating on the eyelashes (if its caused by an allergy). Conjunctivitis can affect one eye at first, but usually affects both eyes after a few hours. The conjunctiva can become inflamed as result of: (1) a bacterial or viral infection (2) an allergic reaction to a substance such as pollen or dust mites (3) the eye coming into contact with substances that can irritate the conjunctiva, such as chlorinated water or shampoo, or a loose eyelash rubbing against the eyeAccording to Medicinenet, here’s what you and your children can do to prevent the spread of the infection: (1) Teach your child to wash hands with soap and water frequently and thoroughly. (2) Never let children share eye drops, pillow cases, towels/washcloths, tissues or eye makeup. (3) After youve treated an infected childs eyes, immediately and carefully wash your own hands. (4) Safely discard any gauze or cotton balls used to clean your childs eye. (5) Wash your childs linens in very hot water separately from the rest of the familys laundry. (6) For children who get allergic conjunctivitis, frequently vacuum your home, and keep windows closed when outdoor allergen counts are high. ...
