Odontology or dentistry is known as the branch of science concerned with the anatomy, development and diseases of the oral cavity, maxillofacial area and the adjacent and associated structures and their impact on the human body.


Odontology covers areas of dentistry and has established extensive knowledge, therefore there are various specialties like: General Dentists- they provide a range of services for the entire family; Endodontists- they specialize in diseases and injuries of the dental pulp and provide services such as root canal treatment; Oral pathologists- diagnose diseases of the mouth from the study of tissue samples; Oral Surgeons- extracting impacted teeth and repair fractures of the jaw and other injuries of the bone structure found around the mouth; Orthodontists- straighten misaligned teeth and jaws, usually by applying braces; Paediatrics dentists- they specialize in children and adolescents; Periodontists- treat diseases of the tissues that surround and support teeth; Prosthodontists- specialists in the restoration of natural teeth and / or replacement of missing teeth with crowns, bridges, dentures, implants and other procedures.

By nature of their general training they can carry out the majority of dental treatments such as restorative (fillings, crowns, bridges), prosthetic (dentures), endodontic (root canal) therapy, periodontal (gum) therapy, and exodontia (extraction of teeth), as well as performing examinations, radiographs (x-rays) and diagnosis.
