Description
Insomnia is a symptom, not a stand-alone diagnosis or a disease. By definition, insomnia is difficulty initiating or maintaining sleep, or both or the perception of poor quality sleep.
Causes and Risk factors
The international classification of sleep disorders are over 80 causes of insomnia, which more than 80 treatments are completely dependent on diagnosis or cause of sleeplessness. An example of a cause of insomnia is sleep apnea obstructive disease in which breathing stops while sleeping patient.
If in such a patient is inadvertently given a sedative used to treat insomnia associated with anxiety, it can reach even in death, as usual sedatives are inhibiting respiratory neural centers.
Diagnosis and Treatment
While treating underlying physical and mental issues is a good first step, it may not be enough to cure the insomnia. Its also needed to look at the daily habits. Some of the things a person is doing to cope with insomnia may actually make the problem worse. ...
