Amikacin eliminates bacteria that cause many kinds of infections, including lung, skin, bone, joint, stomach, blood, and urinary tract infections. It belongs to a class of drugs known as aminoglycoside antibiotics. It works by stopping the growth of bacteria. This antibiotic treats only bacterial infections. It will not work for viral infections (such as common cold, flu). Unnecessary use or misuse of any antibiotic can lead to its decreased effectiveness.
This medication can cause serious kidney problems and nerve damage, resulting in permanent hearing loss (including deafness or decreased hearing) and balance problems. The risk is increased if you are older, already have kidney disease, or if you have a severe loss of body water. Your risk is also increased if you receive high doses, or with longer use of this medication.
Tell your doctor immediately if you notice ringing/roaring sounds in the ears, hearing loss, dizziness, or an unusual decrease in the amount of your urine. Careful monitoring by your doctor will reduce the risk of these side effects. Monitoring may include hearing, kidney, urine, and drug blood level tests.
If you experience any of the following serious side effects, stop taking amikacin and seek emergency medical attention:an allergic reaction (shortness of breath; closing of the throat; hives; swelling of the lips, face, or tongue; rash; or fainting); little or no urine; decreased hearing or ringing in the ears; dizziness, clumsiness, or unsteadiness; numbness, skin tingling, muscle twitching, or seizures; or severe watery diarrhea and abdominal cramps. ...
Tell your doctor and pharmacist if you are allergic to any drugs as well as prescription and nonprescription medications you are taking, especially diuretics ('water pills'), cisplatin (Platinol), amphotericin (Amphotec, Fungizone), other antibiotics, and vitamins.
Your doctor should be informed if you have or have ever had kidney disease, vertigo, hearing loss, ringing in the ears, myasthenia gravis, or Parkinson's disease.
It is not recommended to use this drug during pregnancy or breastfeeding without your doctor's advice. ...
