This product is used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension), heart failure, or extra fluid in the body (edema).
Lowering high blood pressure helps prevent strokes, heart attacks, and kidney problems . This product contains two medications:amiloride and hydrochlorothiazide. Both medications are water pills (diuretics) and cause your body to get rid of extra salt and water. This effect may increase the amount of urine you make when you first start the product. Amiloride also helps to treat or prevent low blood potassium levels. ...
Side Effect:
Headache, dizziness, nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, stomach/abdominal pain, gas, or diarrhea may occur. If any of these effects persist or worsen, tell your doctor or pharmacist promptly.
This product may cause a loss of too much body water (dehydration) and salt/minerals. Tell your doctor immediately if you have any of these unlikely but serious symptoms of dehydration or mineral loss:very dry mouth, extreme thirst, muscle cramps, weakness, fast heartbeat, severe dizziness, confusion, unusual decrease in the amount of urine, fainting, seizures.
Tell your doctor immediately if any of these rare but serious side effects occur:yellowing eyes/skin, dark urine, persistent nausea/vomiting, unusual change in the amount of urine (not including the normal increase in urine when you first start this drug), decrease in vision, eye pain.
A very serious allergic reaction to this drug is rare. However, seek immediate medical attention if you notice any of the following symptoms of a serious allergic reaction:rash, itching/swelling (especially of the face/tongue/throat), severe dizziness, trouble breathing. ...
Precaution:
Prior to taking amiloride and hydrochlorothiazide, inform your doctor and pharmacist if you have any type of allergies.
Tell your doctor and pharmacist what prescription and nonprescription medications you are taking, medications for arthritis, diabetes, or high blood pressure; potassium supplements; and vitamins. Do not take this medicine if you are taking spironolactone or triamterene.
Tell your doctor if you have or have ever had diabetes, gout, or kidney or liver disease.
If you are having surgery, including dental surgery, tell the doctor or dentist that you are taking amiloride and hydrochlorothiazide.
You should know that this drug may make you drowsy. Do not drive a car or operate machinery until you know how this drug affects you. Limit your alcohol intake.
During pregnancy and breastfeeding is not recommended to use this medicine without your doctor's advice. ...
