Akorn Pharmaceuticals | Amiodarone (Medication)

Amiodarone is an antianginal and antiarrhythmic drug. It increases the duration of ventricular and atrial muscle action by inhibiting Na,K-activated myocardial adenosine triphosphatase. There is a resulting decrease in heart rate and in vascular resistance.

Amiodarone is used to help keep the heart beating normally in people with life-threatening heart rhythm disorders of the ventricles (the lower chambers of the heart that allow blood to flow out of the heart). Amiodarone is used to treat ventricular tachycardia or ventricular fibrillation. In addition to being an antiarrhythmic medication, amiodarone also causes blood vessels to dilate. This effect can result in a drop in blood pressure. Because of this effect, it also may be of benefit in patients with congestive heart failure. ...
