Actonel slows bone loss while increasing bone mass, which may prevent bone fracture. his medication is used to treat or prevent osteoporosis in men and women and Paget's disease of bone. It also is used to prevent and treat osteoporosis caused by steroid medications (glucocorticoid-induced osteoporosis).

Most common, Actonel may cause:mild heartburn or stomach upset; diarrhea, gas, or constipation; abdominal pain, rash, high blood pressure, mild joint or back pain; or headache. If any of these persist or worsen, call your doctor.
More severe adverse reaction include:an allergy – rash, itching, difficulty breathing, closing of the throat, swelling of the lips, tongue, or face, or hives; chest pain; difficulty or pain when swallowing; pain or burning under the ribs or in the back; new or worsening heartburn; severe joint, bone, or muscle pain; or jaw pain, numbness, or swelling. Before using this medicine inform your doctor if you are allergic to risedronate or if you have any other allergies. Tell your doctor if you are using other medicine and if you have or ever have had any of the following conditions:low blood calcium (hypocalcemia); a vitamin D deficiency; kidney disease; or an ulcer in your stomach or esophagus.
Food, drinks (other than plain water) and medicinal products containing polyvalent cations (eg. calcium, magnesium, iron and aluminum) interfere with the absorption of bisphosphonates and should not be taken with Actonel.
Because Actonelcan cause serious problems in the stomach or esophagus it is recommended to stay upright for at least 30 minutes after taking this medication.
