The plant Borago officinalis is the source of borage seed oil, one of the few food sources of gamma linolenic acid (GLA), a type of omega-6 fatty acid. Unlike the more prevalent omega-6 fatty acid linoleic acid, GLA does not promote inflammation in the body, and in fact, decreases inflammation. Research indicates that GLA from borage seed oil is beneficial for treating rheumatoid arthritis
