Fat Lips

Mouth | Odontologie | Fat Lips (Symptom)

Description

Lips are among the most visible facial features. They need proper care as they are one of the most delicate features of a person's face. Sometimes, injury, allergies or other reasons may cause lips to get swollen up.

Causes

Swelling of the lips or fat lips can occur due to different conditions. Trauma to the lip and mouth area is an obvious cause. Allergic reactions, either to foods or other substances, can often be accompanied by swelling of the lips. Some infections (such as herpes simplex virus infection) can result in blisters and localized swelling of the lips. Infections and inflammatory conditions of the skin can also lead to inflammation and swollen lips (cheilitis). Less commonly, medical conditions that affect the entire body may cause lip swelling, sometimes in association with fluid retention or swelling in other areas of the body.

Some other causes for fat swollen lips may include: acromegaly, angioedema, bacterial Infections, cheilitis, cosmetic surgery (Lip Injections or Implants), erythema multiforme, Hunter Syndrome (Mucopolysaccharidosis Type II), medication side effects, trauma, tumors, vitamin B2 deficiency.

Diagnosis and Treatment

The course of treatment would depend upon the underlying cause. In case swelling is caused by some internal health issue, treatment to relieve the root cause would, automatically, relieve the inflammation of the lips. In case of trauma to the lips, topical application of skin-soothing lip salves or administration of anti-inflammatory medication (in rare or extreme cases) will be needed.
