Hypogeusia or Loss of Taste

Mouth | Otorhinolaryngology | Hypogeusia or Loss of Taste (Symptom)

Description

Hypogeusia is a diminished sense of taste due to transport disorders (in accessing the interior of the taste bud) or to sensorineural disorders (affecting the gustatory sensory cells or nerves, or the central gustatory neural pathways). It may be hereditary or acquired; may be general to all tastants, partial to some tastants, or specific to one or more tastants.

Causes

Causes of hypogeusia include the chemotherapy drug bleomycin, an antitumor antibiotic as well as zinc deficiency.
