Description
A neck mass is a general term used to describe a mass found in the cervical area before the underlying cause has been identified.
Causes
Most neck masses have a specific cause. These masses are specific sites depending on the age group concerned, which allows a systematic approach to establish a diagnosis and, in turn, a management plan for each case. It may be due to cervical lymphadenopathy (enlarged lymph nodes in the neck), goiter (enlarged thyroid, a lipoma (fatty tumor), a torn muscle or thyroid cancer.
