Description
Protruding abdomen is a condition in which the abdomen (belly) feels full and tight. The abdomen may be visibly swollen (distended).
Causes
Common causes of protruding, full and tight belly include: air swallowing (a nervous habit), constipation, gastroesophageal reflux, irritable bowel syndrome, lactose intolerance and other food, overeating, bacterial overgrowth in the small intestine, weight gain, the l diabetes drug acarbose, like any medicine containing lactulose or sorbitol, can cause bloating.
The more serious disorders that can cause bloating are: ascites and tumours, celiac disease, the rapid dumping syndrome, ovarian cancer or when the pancreas can not produce enzymes to help digestion.
