Description
Insomnia is defined as difficulty initiating or maintaining sleep, or both, despite the opportunity and time to sleep, which leads to impaired daytime functioning.
Causes
Insomnia may be due to poor quality or quantity of sleep. It can have many causes. Situational factors and stress that can lead to insomnia include: jet lag, physical discomfort (heat, cold, light, noise, unfamiliar surroundings), different shifts, stressful life situations (divorce or separation, death of a loved one, losing a job, preparing for an exam), illicit drug use, smoking, caffeine intake before going to bed, intoxication by alcohol or certain medicines.
